In today's day and age, teachers have to deal with the issues of copyright and fair use. Copyright is a legal right given to someone who creates and puts out material that is not allowed to be used by others without permission. These creators and their work is protected by the copyright law. Fair use is the exception to the copyright rule. Fair use is a doctrine in the copyright law that says some copyright material may be used without permission or consequence for news reporting, teaching, and research. Dealing with both copyright and fair use as a teacher seems like it would be tedious and exhausting. I feel like it is always important to air on the side of caution and create your own materials instead of getting a potential lawsuit over using someone else's.
Along with the benefits and positive things technology contributes to education, there are some issues that arise. Two issues that I find to be extremely important are academic dishonesty and decreased productivity. It is so easy for students to cheat using online resources, especially with classes currently being online. In an in person class setting, I feel like cheating is much easer to be managed. In an online class setting, applications such as honor lock can be used to decrease the amount of cheating. However it is still possible for students to find ways to cheat in both settings. Students also get distracted and are less productive when technology is involved. This is an issue that I personally struggle with everyday. Once again, in a physical classroom, it is easier to focus free from technology, but it is much harder with online classes. Putting your phone in another room or even using screen time to manage how much time you are spending on certain apps are good ways to try and eliminate distractions.
This week I gained a few new skills when creating my newsletter design. This assignment introduced me to different tools on Word that I had never used before such as the columns and hyperlink tools. I think that if I continue to use these tools and become more familiar with them, I can make my newsletter more cohesive next time. I can definitely use these tools in the future when I'm creating a newsletter for my own real class someday!
